Caldecott Challenge 1990-1992

Welcome to the 90s!

This post covers my years in high school and starts a stretch of time when I don't remember reading any picture books. There are many familiar books in these Caldecott years, but I did not "meet" them until I became a teacher or librarian.

The Cupcake's favorite: "More More More," Said the Baby - Her response, "Let's do that one again!"

I wish I had read in high school: Bill Peet: An Autobiography - Reading it now I was fascinated by his connection to early Disney films. I know I would have loved reading this when it came out.

I also love that Bill Peet has another Caldecott connection - he had a big role in turning 1943 Caldecott Winner The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton into a Disney short.
But... um... the book is soooo much better.
See for yourself:

Most often checked out from my library: Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins. There is something about this trickster tale that kids in my library love. Any time of year, this one gets circs.

Favorite Cover: I love that Puss in Boots - probably not too much of a surprise after so many references to the "cats of Caldecott" that I would be drawn to one that is front and center on the cover.

and... 4 More Caldecott Cats - look for them in the pictures below.

Lon Po Po: A Red-Riding Hood Story from China

Caldecott Challenge 1986-1989

It's the end of the 80s!
The decade of my elementary and junior high years.

Books including illustrations with the number 5: 2! The Song and Dance Man (Winner 1989) and The Relatives Came (Honor 1986). Both illustrated by Minnesotan Stephen Gammell. We may have a number connection as well as a location connection!

The Cupcake's favorite (my 3 yr old): Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters - as soon as we finished reading she was pretending to be Nyasha.

Title I remember reading in the 80s:  King Bidgood's in the Bathtub - I would have been in 6th or 7th grade when this first came out, but my little sister would have been about 4. So I think that is why I would have read it at the time. I still love the totally absurd humor! Love the secrets of the illustrations too.

Number of books including cats in the illustrations: Only 2 this time - Goldilocks and the Three Bears & Mirandy and Brother Wind  (unless you count the lion from Alphabatics).

Number of books including a Bull Terrier: Just The Polar Express, but he's extra special.

Caldecott Challenge 1983-1985

I'm back at it, and determined to finish my Caldecott Challenge reading by the 75th Anniversary Celebrations coming up in Chicago at the ALA Annual Conference.

After all of the books were checked back in for summer at my library, I piled up the remaing Caldecott Challenge books, loaded them up, and brought them home. I'm ready!

My favorite "new to me" read: The Glorious Flight: Across the Channel with Louis Bleriot
I had never heard of Bleriot, and his designs are fascinating. Pair this with some footage of the Bleriot XI that still flies today, and kids will be enchanted by the history.

The Bud's favorite: St. George and the Dragon. You can't beat those dragon-y, battle-y illustrations. His comment, "Whoa, good thing the dragon didn't land in the magic pond or under the healing tree!."

AND

6 More Caldecott Cats! Find them in the pictures below.

Doll Bones by Holly Black

Happy Book Birthday to:

What it's about (in one sentence): A doll that may be haunted by the ghost of a little girl, leads three friends on a thrilling adventure.

What I love:
Doll Bones is about three friends, now in middle school, who have played a game together since they were very young. Their game is all about creating elaborate adventure stories starring characters they based on their dolls or action figures. The three friends are all collaborative authors of an amazing story.
Suddenly one doll, a character they call The Queen, starts to communicate with them through dreams. She is an antique bone china doll that seems to be haunted by the ghost of a little girl - a ghost that needs their help.
I love the elaborate collaborative story telling of the three friends in this story. It is because of this element that you as a reader don't know for sure if The Queen really is haunted or if it is just another part of the friends' story.
I also love that the creepiness of the potentially haunted doll is thrilling without being nightmare inducing for the upper elementary/middle school set.

Did you know...

1. Holly Black has a secret library in her house. Take a tour here.

2. Puns make her go insane.

3. She loves lots of fabulous books. See a list of her favorites here.

My students and I are very excited that Holly Black will be visiting our school later this week.
To celebrate, I am giving away a signed copy of Doll Bones.

This Giveaway will run from 5/7 until 11:59 p.m. on Saturday 5/11.
You must be at least 13 to enter.
